A technical preparatory meeting, ‘Towards a High-level Dialogue on the Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture (WASAG),’ will discuss water scarcity and its impacts on food security, nutrition, biodiversity, and peace and stability. The event will support preparations for the High-level Dialogue on WASAG, which will take place during the World Food Forum (WFF) in October 2024. These events are expected to consolidate and scale up the WASAG partnership towards increased visibility, commitment, and impact.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) will host this hybrid event. WASAG is an FAO-hosted partnership, which was launched at the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UNFCCC. WASAG aims to support governments and stakeholders in the achievement of the water-related targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with particular emphasis on SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation) and SDG 2 (zero hunger). WASAG also contributes to SDG 1 (no poverty), SDG 13 (climate action), SDG 15 (life on land), and SDG 17 (partnerships for the Goals).
The meeting aims to enhance collaboration, mobilize commitments, and agree on priorities and operational mechanisms for WASAG to maximize its impact. Participants will share experiences and knowledge in addressing water scarcity and develop recommendations on priorities in addressing water scarcity in agriculture. The event will also engage member countries in the new member-led steering committee that will be formally established during the High-level Dialogue on WASAG.
