Special Session of the UN General Assembly on the World Drug Problem

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) will hold a Special Session (UNGASS) on the world drug problem, which will signify an important milestone in achieving goals set in the 2009 policy document ‘Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem'. The policy document sets out goals to be achieved by 2019. The Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) has the primary responsibility for drug control matters under the UN and was tasked with coordinating the preparatory process for the UNGASS. The preparatory process includes substantive consultations with UN entities and agencies, relevant international and regional organizations, civil society and other relevant stakeholders. The UNGASS will consist of a general debate and five interactive, multi-stakeholder roundtables on: demand reduction; supply reduction; human rights, women and children; new challenges; and alternative development.
