The Second Integrated Research on Disaster Risk Conference will take place under the theme ‘Integrated Disaster Risk Science: A Tool for Sustainability,' with an emphasis on science as a tool to address hazard risks and sustainable development. Plenaries and break-out sessions will discuss challenges in implementing integrated disaster risk research as well as inter-organisational collaboration and policy issues, using examples from global and local contexts. Plenary sessions will focus on: the role of science in the 2015 agenda; water; science and the media; and resiliency and reconstruction. More than ten breakout sessions will take place, including ones on: community disaster reduction; empowering local officials; and indigenous and vulnerable populations. A special session will address earth observations for disaster risk reduction in developing countries. The Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) programme and the Chinese Academy of Sciences are organizing the conference in collaboration with a number of partners, including the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).
