Prospects for Environmental Adjudication and Effective Enforcement in the Americas

The Organization of American States (OAS) is organizing this meeting to follow-up on its series of thematic “hemispheric dialogues” on justice, governance and law for environmental sustainability in the run-up to the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20). This dialogue, organized in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the International Network for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement (INECE) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Commission on Environmental Law, will look at the prospects for environmental adjudication and effective enforcement in the Americas, and will address four themes: advancing justice, government and law for environmental sustainability; the roles of prosecutors and of the judiciary; trends in enforcement and compliance; and the institutional framework for environmental sustainability.
