International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste 2024

In 2019, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) designated 29 September as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (A/RES/74/209).

In the resolution, the UNGA recognized that the observance of the Day would contribute significantly to raising awareness of the importance of the problem and its possible solutions at all levels, and to promote global efforts and collective action towards meeting SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production). Reducing food loss and waste can also have a positive impact on food security and food availability and decrease the cost of food, contributing to more resilient food systems.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) collaborate in facilitating the observance of the Day.
