International Conference on the Future of Cities

The Government of Japan, the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the City of Kitakyushu, Japan, are jointly hosting this conference, following on from the outcome of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), which acknowledged the importance of building sustainable cities. Japan launched the “Green Future” Initiative on the occasion of Rio+20; one of its aims is to build resource-efficient and environmentally-friendly systems in urban areas around the world. The conference will: discuss sustainable urban planning and the post-2015 development agenda; promote an eco-cities network in Southeast Asia; and hold a Mayor's Forum on sustainable green growth. The conference will provide a venue to share information about urban challenges and innovative solutions, especially for participants from environment, development, urban planning and foreign affairs ministries; local government; international organizations; NGOs; and research organizations. This conference is closed to additional participants.
