High-Level Side Event on Engaging People for Sustainable Development: Accountability, Transparency and Participation

This high-level event will discuss the importance of accountability, transparency and participation in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Topics will include: existing mechanisms at national and sub-national levels for ensuring transparency and accountability; the role of local authorities, the private sector, civil society organizations, academia and other stakeholders in implementation; and key institutional and capacity development enablers that could contribute to achieving the post-2015 development agenda. Representatives of countries from different regions will share their national experiences of promoting accountability, transparency and participation in the implementation and monitoring of the SDGs. The event will also discuss a potential set of guiding principles to enable and encourage people to participate in accountability mechanisms related to SDG implementation. The Governments of Botswana, Mongolia and Switzerland are organizing the event, which is convening on the sidelines of the UN Summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda.
