This high-level event will convene on the sidelines of Habitat III in Quito, Ecuador, organized by Maldives, Chair of Alliance for Small Island States (AOSIS), the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the UN Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS), and UN-Habitat. The meeting will address the diversity of urban issues faced by small island developing States (SIDS), and provide guidance on the best ways SIDS can enhance urban resilience and sustainability. The event will provide an opportunity for participants to share best practices to improve urban planning, governance and institutional mechanisms. It will also discuss how enhancing urban resilience and promoting sustainable urban development could contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the SAMOA Pathway, the New Urban Agenda (which is expected to be adopted at Habitat III in October 2016), and Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). Specifically, the meeting will address, among other things: how cities and smaller settlement issues are addressed and managed in different SIDS; how resiliency is being applied to cities; examples of good, innovative sustainable urban development practices and policies of and implementation challenges; how the UN and member States can partner to help achieve SDG 11. The meeting will also: provide recommendations for the sustainable development of cities in SIDS through policy, planning and design, and regulatory instruments; and promote partnerships for the coordinated implementation of the 2030 Agenda, the SAMOA Pathway and the New Urban Agenda.
