Good Governance for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM): Lessons from the Americas

The Organization of American States (OAS), as a co-sponsor of the World Congress on Justice, Governance and Law for Environmental Sustainability, is conducting a series of “hemispheric dialogues” on sustainable development themes intended to generate recommendations on institutions and governance for sustainable development for both the Congress and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20). The fourth in the series, co-sponsored by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), will address strengthening water resources management and what recommendations to make regarding improving good governance for conflict prevention in water resources, in particular in transboundary waters. Future dialogues will address: biodiversity; energy and climate change; oceans governance; forest governance; improving environmental performance of the private sector; and risk management and emergency legislation.
