First North American Dialogue on Biocultural Diversity

The First North American Dialogue on Biocultural Diversity aims to promote exchange and co-production of knowledge between different actors to improve understanding of the interlinkages between biological and cultural dimensions of diversity, and the implications for resource management and decision-making processes. The Dialogue also aims to raise awareness of the role of indigenous languages and of local and indigenous knowledge and management systems for biocultural diversity. The meeting will seek to:

  • Identify links between biological and cultural diversity in the North American region, along with major drivers of biological and cultural diversity loss;
  • Identify solutions and good practices, actions and actors, at various levels, to protect and restore biological and cultural diversity; and
  • Explore synergies between interlinked provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, and the potential benefits of an integrated approach.

The Dialogue is convened by the CBD Secretariat, UNESCO and regional and local partners.
