On 17 March 20011, the EU Commission launches a series of debates on genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Chaired by EU Health and Consumer Policy Commissioner John Dalli, the first event will focus on Risk Assessment of GMOs. The debate will be attended by experts, stakeholders, members of the European Parliament and NGO representatives. The discussion will focus on: independence of risk assessment bodies; applications for GMO authorizations; the EU Commission's draft regulation on implementing rules for GM food; and environmental risk assessment of GM plants. A web stream of the event will be available on the website of the EU Commission Directorate General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO).
