Energy Technology R&D Needs of Emerging Economies

The Experts’ Group on R&D Priority-Setting and Evaluation (EGRD) of the International Energy Association (IEA) will host an international workshop for invited experts to discuss the clean energy technology research and development (R&D) needs of emerging economies. The event is being organized under the auspices of IEA in cooperation with China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). Topics at the event will include: global perspectives on existing clean energy technology R&D investments and the role of emerging economies; comparative analysis of clean energy R&D; perspectives from selected OECD countries; regional perspectives of investors; and needs of selected organizations. This workshop will focus on regions and markets in Asia. Target outcomes will include: identifying what drives energy demand in each country and region; envisioning the desired future energy systems; prioritizing R&D investment for emerging economies; exploring means of cooperation; and listing the implications for the future. A premise of the workshop is that emerging economies have unique clean energy technology R&D needs due to combined issues such as their stage of development, natural resource endowments, fuel quality, cultural aspects of energy use, demographics and urbanization. According to IEA, most future energy demand and emissions will come from equipment and infrastructure not yet built, and so there is an opportunity to develop that equipment and infrastructure in a way that reduces emissions.
