The Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on SDG 13 and Its Interlinkages with Other SDGs will explore and strengthen the linkages among SDG 13 (climate action) and other SDGs that will be under review during the July 2024 session of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), namely SDG 1 (no poverty), SDG 2 (zero hunger), SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions), and SDG 17 (partnerships for the Goals). The meeting aims to take stock of progress towards SDG 13, including in the context of recent commitments during the Climate and SDG Synergies Conference, the Climate Summit, and the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28).

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the UNFCCC will organize the event with the support of interested UN system organizations. Japan’s Ministry of Environment is hosting the EGM. The EGM will prepare the 2024 HLPF review of SDG 13 and consider its role in advancing sustainable development across the 2023 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The 2024 HLPF is the first one following the SDG Summit. Within this context, the EGM will also discuss how to harness the political momentum from the Summit.

The EGM will also:

  • identify challenges and opportunities or accelerating transformation, leveraging synergies, and minimizing tradeoffs;
  • share knowledge about success stories and promising solutions;
  • identify good practices, challenges, and areas of concern;
  • present evidence and analysis on the state of SDG 13; and
  • recommend ways to overcome bottlenecks and accelerate achievement of SDG 13, including by shaping policies, partnerships, and coordination at all levels.
