Climate Ambition Summit 2023

In December 2022, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced that he will convene a Climate Ambition Summit in September 2023. He urged leaders from governments, business, cities and regions, civil society, and finance to come with new, tangible, and credible climate action to accelerate the pace of change.

Briefing Member States on 9 June, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed identified the Summit as an opportunity for “First Movers and Doers” to “tell us how they are responding to the Secretary-General’s call to ‘accelerate’ climate action”. She said the Summit will be organized around “three distinct but interrelated tracks”:

  • Ambition, aimed at governments, especially major emitters;
  • Credibility, aimed at leaders of businesses, cities, regions, and financial institutions; and
  • Implementation, aimed at showcasing existing and emerging partnerships that either accelerate decarbonization in high-emitting sectors such as energy or shipping or deliver progress on climate justice in areas such as early warning systems and adaptation financing.

The Summit will convene alongside the second SDG Summit, which aims to accelerate action at the mid-way point of the SDGs.
