The Mediterranean Forest Week will bring together policy and decision makers, forest administrators, researchers, practitioners, donors, and social and environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to discuss the future of Mediterranean forests. The Week will engage youth and feature a youth dialogue as part of the event.
The Mediterranean Forest Week takes place every two years and is a key platform for regional forestry-related cooperation and stakeholder dialogue. The Joint Organizing Committee for the Week includes 15 organizations led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Committee of Mediterranean Forestry Questions – ‘Silva Mediterranea,’ and the European Forest Institute Mediterranean Facility (EFIMED). Partners include the UN Environment Progamme (UNEP), the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia.
The Week aims to highlight and propose regional efforts that will contribute to global commitments and initiatives on the restoration and promotion of biodiversity, including the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the Bonn Challenge, and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Participants will discuss the 2024 State of Mediterranean Forests report and the Mediterranean Forest Research Agenda.
The Week will feature six plenary sessions with panel discussions on forest landscape restoration, forest adaptation, biodiversity, wildfires, green cities, and development cooperation and financial instruments. Participants will consider how to build resilience for Mediterranean forest ecosystems through restoration strategies and policies and discuss the role of green cities for adaptation and resilience, including how to promote co-benefits for the environment, society, and human health.
