The 12th Roundtable on Financing Water will focus on the theme, ‘Strengthening the Sustainability of Water Investments: Alternative Financing Approaches and Models’. The meeting aims to explore funding and financing models that can foster greater sustainability and resilience of water-related investments and will help inform the finance agendas of the 2026 UN Water Conference and the 11th World Water Forum.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) will co-organize the meeting.

The roundtable will also explore how Islamic finance principles and instruments, including risk, profit sharing, and asset-backed finance, can support more sustainable water investments. Sessions will focus on:

  • restructuring finance for water, emphasizing quality of finance and sharing of risks and rewards between capital providers and recipients;
  • redesigning public-private partnerships (PPPs) for water to focus on sustainability;
  • unlocking capital markets for water, including by leveraging green and sustainable bonds and sukuk finance for freshwater-related investments;
  • examining results-based financing and its potential for financing sustainable water investments;
  • promoting social equity through water investments, including through philanthropy and Islamic social finance; and
  • exploring the untapped potential of Islamic finance for sustainable water investments.
