UN/ISDR Names Senegalese Mayor as Disaster Risk Reduction Champion

18 December 2010: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that Cheikh Mamadou Abiboulaye Dieye, Mayor of Saint Louis, Senegal, has been named champion of the “Making Cities Resilient” campaign.

The award was granted in recognition of his achievements in advancing disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation in Saint Louis City. An award ceremony was held during the regional conference on Climate Change and Local Governance: African Cities Commit. The conference, organized by Saint Louis City, together with UN/ISDR, UN-HABITAT and other partners, was held to discuss the impact of climate change and variability on cities, and the role of local governments in engaging in climate change adaptation-related action.
