6 October 2009: At the behest of climate negotiators and policy makers involved in the UNFCCC negotiations leading up to the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference in December 2009, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has published an excerpt from its annual World Energy Outlook (WEO) in advance this year, to ensure that negotiators are equipped with up-to-date knowledge about the global energy sector.
The “World Energy Outlook 2009 Climate Change Excerpt,” analyzes what policy measures will be necessary, sector by sector, to move key countries and regions (including the United States, Japan, the European Union, Russia, China and India) onto a 450ppm trajectory. The report incorporates the significant impact that the financial and economic crises have had on global energy and focuses especially on policies and investments needed up to 2020, corresponding to the timeframe negotiators are dealing with in Copenhagen in December 2009.
The report also includes current energy use and emissions statistics in its newly updated Reference Scenario section. WEO 2009 will be released in its entirety on 10 November 2009, containing more analysis than is included in the excerpt. [The report]
