SDG 6 Water Action Agenda Special Event 2024

The SDG 6 and Water Action Agenda Special Event is one of a series of high-profile special events taking place on the sidelines of the 2024 UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). The event takes place annually during the HLPF to facilitate space for discussion on water-related SDG targets.

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is convening several high-profile special events to highlight the impact of key sectors of society in driving SDG implementation, including this one on water and sanitation topics. DESA is organizing this event with UN-Water.

The fourth annual SDG 6 Special Event will focus on the five SDGs under HLPF review in 2024: SDG 1 (no poverty); SDG 2 (zero hunger); SDG 13 (climate action); SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions); and SDG 17 (partnerships for the Goals). Participants will discuss approaches to mainstream water in relation to these five SDGs.

The Special Event will launch the UN System-wide Strategy for Water and Sanitation. It will showcase country-level actions towards implementing the new strategy and launch SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework Country Acceleration Case Studies from Cambodia, the Czech Republic, and Jordan.

The event will offer an opportunity to reflect on international water events, including commitments made during and after the 2023 UN Water Conference. Participants will also prepare for future events, including the 2026 UN Water Conference.
