The Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) organizes an annual forum as a special event to the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) to highlight the role of higher education in achieving sustainable development. The 2024 event will focus on the theme, ‘The Future of Higher Education for Sustainable Development’.

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is convening several high-profile special events to highlight the impact of key sectors of society in driving SDG implementation, including this one on higher education.

The Forum will convene stakeholders to discuss the intersection of education, innovation, and sustainability, with an emphasis on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies. The Forum will also showcase initiatives from the UN system and HESI action groups that highlight the role of higher education in advancing SDG implementation.

HESI, a partnership between UN entities and the higher education community, is currently chaired by DESA, UN University (UNU), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC), and the Sulitest Association. Other partners include the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UN Global Compact’s Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative, the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the UN Office for Partnerships (UNOP), and UN Academic Impact.
