Seventh Local and Regional Governments Forum on the 2030 Agenda

The High-Level Local and Regional Governments Forum (LRGF) is one of a series of high-profile special events taking place on the sidelines of the 2024 UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). The event will focus on the theme, ‘Governing in Partnership and Powering a Local SDG Rescue Plan,’ and showcase effective localization policies and high-impact coalitions led by the local and regional government constituency, related to the five SDGs under review at HLPF 2024.

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is convening several high-profile special events to highlight the impact of key sectors of society in driving SDG implementation, including this one on the local and regional government constituency. DESA will organize this event with the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments (GTF), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the Local 2030 Coalition.

2024 is a key year for the local and regional government constituency because the Summit of the Future will convene in September to forge a new global consensus on our shared future. The local and regional government constituency has actively engaged in the Summit of the Future process to strengthen engagement between local and regional governments and the UN system through the Local Authorities Major Group and through the Advisory Group on Local and Regional Governments to the UN Secretary-General. The event offers an opportunity for the constituency to share key messages and inputs towards the Summit of the Future and the 2025 World Social Summit.

The event will bring together local and regional governments, representatives from the UN, and other stakeholders to illustrate the interconnected importance and breadth of local action and governing in partnership to power the SDG Rescue plan through six key transitions. The event will focus on building high-impact coalitions led by local and regional governments as transformative, multi-sectoral partnerships to drive progress.

The Forum will focus on the five SDGs under HLPF review in 2024: SDG 1 (no poverty); SDG 2 (zero hunger); SDG 13 (climate action); SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions); and SDG 17 (partnerships for the Goals). Participants will explore the interconnection between multilevel cooperation and the effective implementation of these SDGs. The event will also showcase the role of voluntary local reviews (VLRs) and voluntary subnational reviews (VSRs) in supporting policy transformation towards SDG achievement and their connection with voluntary national reviews (VNRs), including sharing advancements in local reporting and monitoring initiatives.
