‘Governance’, ‘Education’ and the Architecture of the Sustainable Development Goals

This policy forum aims to inform discussions taking place at the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals (OWG) by identifying some key questions relating to the architecture and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Policy Forum is co-organized by the UN University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), Tokyo Institute of Technology, and the POST2015 Project, with sponsorship from Japan's Ministry of the Environment. The event focuses on the following topics and key questions: SDG architecture: How can the SDGs be designed in a way which is universal but which takes national circumstances into account?; The case of integrated SDGs in education: How will education feature in the promotion of other SDGs?; and “Governance” as a sustainable development goal or target: the panel will consider the three types of governance that need to be considered: good governance (the processes of decision-making), effective governance (the capacity of countries to pursue sustainable development), and equitable governance (distributive outcomes).
