The workshop brought together participants from Bermuda, New Caledonia and Viet Nam to share experiences and lessons learned with regards to linking the Rio Conventions at the national level.
It also highlighted needs ranging from improved access to tools to assess the economic value of ecosystem services, to closer coordination between Europe and its overseas territories for the implementation of the Rio Conventions.
2 November 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), conducted a capacity building workshop on national level implementation of synergies among the Rio Conventions (CBD, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)).
The workshop, held in Hanoi, Viet Nam, included participants from Bermuda, New Caledonia and Viet Nam. It focused on a number of thematic areas for linking the Rio Conventions, including ecosystem based approaches to adaptation, reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+), and mapping the vulnerability of species and ecosystems to the negative impacts of climate change.
The workshop facilitated exchanges of experience among the pilot countries, and highlighted needs ranging from improved access to tools to assess the economic value of ecosystem services, to closer coordination between Europe and its overseas territories for the implementation of the Rio Conventions.
