Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress Closes for Signature

The Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Biosafety Protocol was open for signature from 7 March 2011 to 6 March 2012, during which time it was signed by 50 countries and the EU.

It will come into force once it has been ratified by 40 countries.

CBD8 March 2012: The Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety closed for signature after having been signed by 50 States and the EU.

The Supplementary Protocol was open for signature at UN Headquarters in New York, US, from 7 March 2011 to 6 March 2012. Brazil, the Central African Republic, Japan, Mexico, the UK and Thailand were among the last countries to sign the Supplementary Protocol before closure.

The Supplementary Protocol will come into force once it has been ratified by 40 countries. To date, Latvia and the Czech Republic have ratified it. Countries that have not signed Supplementary Protocol can still accede by depositing an instrument of accession with the UN Secretary General.
