The second week of COP 23 is underway in Bonn. Already, many of the discussions and events there have drawn attention to the intersection between the climate and development spaces. A number of papers, blog posts and events look at achieving climate goals against the broader sustainable development context.

11 November 2017: The UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany, continued on Friday and Saturday, 10-11 November 2017. The facilitative sharing of views (FSV) and the multilateral assessment convened on Friday, and the COP President held an informal stocktaking plenary on Saturday. During the two days, informal consultations and contact groups convened under the Conference of the Parties (COP), the COP serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP), the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA), the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI).

11 November 2017: Various side events and Action Days took place on the sidelines of UNFCCC COP 23 on Friday and Saturday, 10-11 November, addressing, inter alia, energy policy, sustainable urban development, peatlands, food security and transitioning economies away from coal. Oceans, Agriculture and Water Action Days also convened.

11 November 2017: At the UN Climate Change Conference, currently underway in Bonn, Germany, the UNFCCC Technology Mechanism has been demonstrating how it is supporting countries to accelerate climate technology development in 2017. Speaking at the 2017 Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted climate change and growing inequality as “collateral damage” to economic growth.

10 November 2017: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has published a report titled, ‘Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition,’ focused on Asia and the Pacific. The agency launched the publication at the ‘Asia and the Pacific Symposium on Sustainable Food Systems for Healthy Diets and Improved Nutrition,’ which was organized in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP), World Health Organization (WHO), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Bank.

10 November 2017: As the UN Climate Change Conference enters its second week, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a call for accelerating climate action and raising ambition, citing recent studies showing increasing levels of CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. He called for progress in five ambition action areas: emissions reduction and carbon pricing, resilience building, finance mobilization, further action on partnerships, and enhanced leadership.

9 November 2017: UN Secretary-General António Guterres recently briefed UN Member States on his proposals for reform of the UN peace and security pillar, as issued in October 2017, following which delegates presented their feedback and discussed the way forward.

9 November 2017: With the UN Climate Change Conference in full swing, numerous events and initiatives have focused on climate change adaptation and loss and damage. One of the Conference mandated events, the 11th Focal Point Forum of the Nairobi work programme (NWP), considered the relationship between human settlements and adaptation. Side events convened by UNFCCC constituted bodies discussed risk financing for slow onset events, and supporting adaptation in the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

8 November 2017: The UN Climate Change Conference, currently underway in Bonn, Germany, has been generating momentum for climate action on multiple fronts. A UN press conference on human mobility and climate change, held in the margins of the 23rd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 23) to the UNFCCC, examined the issue of climate change displacement. The UN Development Programme (UNDP) published op-eds on climate resilience and migration, and climate change impacts on human health.

8 November 2017: UN Environment (UNEP) issued its third global Adaptation Gap Report, prepared in collaboration with the Global Centre of Excellence on Climate Adaptation. The report focuses on ways forward to assess progress towards the global goal on adaptation.
ENVIRONMENT-AIR POLLUTION Second Edition of Energy Efficiency Magazine for COP 23 Focuses on Energy Efficiency in Emerging Markets
6 November 2017: The second edition of the "Energy Efficiency Magazine" for the Bonn Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 23), which is published by AOB Group, a Moroccan Business Consulting Group, and supported by the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC), features a range of initiatives highlighting opportunities for, and benefits of, increasing energy efficiency.

6 November 2017: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and UN Climate Change (UNFCCC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to increase cooperation on research and evidence to support climate policy making and climate-smart investment, and on improvement of climate products and services for mitigation and adaptation action.

3 November 2017: UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi presented his annual report to the UN General Assembly’s (UNGA) Third Committee, calling for more equitable sharing of responsibility for refugee resettlement. Meanwhile, OHCHR expressed concern about an unfolding humanitarian crisis as Australia closed its offshore immigration detention facility, leaving around 600 asylum seekers at the location. The UN reports that refugee numbers worldwide have passed 68 million “and counting."

November 2017: The Co-Chair of the Ad Hoc Working Group of the Whole has transmitted a report to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) as part of its agenda item on ‘Oceans and the law of the sea.’ The report highlights progress towards a second 'United Nations World Ocean Assessment' and outlines recommendations to the UNGA.
