Unwto11 May 2016: Participants at the 103rd session of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) addressed the relationship between tourism and sustainability, new technologies, security, and travel facilitation. They also agreed on a programme of work for the UNWTO, and approved an agenda and outline for the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, which will be marked in 2017.

Over 300 representatives from 50 countries, including 17 Ministers and secretaries of tourism, attended the Executive Council meeting, which convened in Málaga, Spain, from 10-11 May 2016.

“Tourism can be a powerful vehicle for promoting and reaching development milestones,” UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai said, underscoring tourism’s contribution to the economic, environmental and social dimensions of sustainability. He highlighted the opportunity for tourism to advance progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), noting that it contributes directly to SDG 8 (Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all), SDG 12 (Ensure sustainable consumption and production (SCP) patterns) and SDG 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development) while having a multiplier effect on many other Goals.

Participants discussed challenges and opportunities presented by tourism, including how to achieve sustainability and security, and saying tourism should serve the planet as well as people. Discussions also recognized growth in international tourist arrivals, which grew 4% in 2015, to nearly 1.2 billion arrivals, according to the UNWTO. It predicts the growth rate will continue to rise in 2016, with increasing numbers of international tourists.

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. In Resolution A/C.2/70/L.5/Rev.1, adopted on 4 December 2015, the UNGA recognizes the importance of an international year of sustainable tourism for development “in fostering better understanding among peoples everywhere, in leading to a greater awareness of the rich heritage of various civilizations and in bringing about a better appreciation of the inherent values of different cultures, thereby contributing to the strengthening of peace in the world.” The Year will kick off with an inaugural event in Madrid, Spain, in January 2017.
