UNESCO Releases Roadmap Towards a Sustainable World

UNESCO's report, titled "From green economies to green societies: UNESCO's commitment to sustainable development," provides a roadmap for future action on how to build equitable, inclusive, green societies through education, the sciences, culture and communication and information.

From Green Economies to Green SocietiesNovember 2011: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has released a report titled “From green economies to green societies: UNESCO’s commitment to sustainable development,” which aims to feed into the preparatory process for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio +20), to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2012. It provides the Organization’s vision for Rio+20 and gives concrete examples demonstrating the Organization’s work to promote sustainable development.

The report also provides a roadmap for future action on how to build equitable, inclusive, green societies through education, the sciences, culture and communication and information. The report includes sections on: educating for a sustainable future; mobilizing science for green transformations; the role of oceans and freshwater in the green economy; conserving biodiversity for life; mitigating and coping with climate change; supporting disaster preparedness and countries in post-crisis situations; culture as a driver for effective sustainable development; UNESCO sites as living laboratories for sustainable development; building awareness for green policy priorities; and UNESCO’s commitment to sustainable development.
