UNCCD Ad Hoc Working Group on Scientific Advice Discusses Scope of Work

The first meeting of the AGSA took place from 30-31 July 2012, in Bonn, Germany.

The meeting sought to: ensure that AGSA members are well informed about their tasks and understand the output they should prepare for COP 11; identify the scope of work and elements to be further elaborated and analyzed; and define the AGSA's working modalities, allocation of tasks, schedule and milestone planning.

31 July 2012: The first meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Group to further discuss the options for the provision of Scientific Advice focusing on desertification/land degradation and drought issues (AGSA), which convened based on Decision 20/COP.10 by the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), considered the AGSA’s scope of work and working modalities.

The meeting sought to: ensure that AGSA members are well informed about their tasks and understand the output they should prepare for COP 11; identify the scope of work and elements to be further elaborated and analyzed; and define the AGSA’s working modalities, allocation of tasks, schedule and milestone planning.

The Group addressed these objectives through work in breakout sessions focused on: role, objectives, mandate, status; UNCCD core disciplines/thematic areas, non-academic knowledge, expected output, activities and deliverables; synergies with existing panels/networks, governance modalities, science policy interface and reporting process; and financial, legal and other implications, implementation mechanism, and functional modalities.

The AGSA consists of 12 members – two experts for each regional group, and two “global experts” selected among representatives of major synergistic efforts and relevant international conventions, organizations and institutions.
