UN Staff Supports Removing Bottled Water from Canteens

27 January 2012: The UN Greening the Blue Campaign has released the results of its staff survey, with 78% of respondents reported to have indicated that staff canteens in UN offices should not sell bottled water.

UN Greening the Blue notes the production and transport of bottled water produces considerable carbon emissions and plastic waste. It notes that levels of concern among UN staff are growing, with more offices taking action to reduce the amount of plastic waste generated from water bottles. Such concern is predicted by the UN to increase further with the release of a new film later in 2012 titled “Plastic Shores,” which focuses on the effects of plastic debris on our marine ecosystem.
