Islands Featured in Abstracts of SBSTTA Poster Session

The theme for the poster session at the 16th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 16) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), held from 30 April - 5 May 2012, in Montreal, Canada, was "Oceans, Coasts, Islands: Achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets." The abstracts accompanying the posters presented were compiled and made available at the meeting as an information document.

CBDMay 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released the abstracts of posters presented during the 16th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 16) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the fourth meeting of the Working Group on the Review of Implementation (WGRI 4). The theme of the poster session was “Oceans, Coasts, Islands: Achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets.”

The theme was selected to complement discussions during SBSTTA 16 on marine and coastal biodiversity, as well as the in-depth review of the Programme of Work on Island Biodiversity (PoWIB). The abstracts showcase, inter alia: the front garden of Nirai Kanai – Sea of Henoko, Okinawa; coastal water pollution and marine biodiversity at the Cross River Estuary of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria; the mangrove forest in the Fonseca Gulf; innovative models of participatory governance of marine protected areas in Ecuador; removing invasive alien vertebrates from islands; East Asia activities of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI); the Caribbean regional response to lionfish invasion; the Micronesia Challenge; and the Global Island Partnership (GLISPA).
