GWP Contributes to Buna/Bojana Transboundary Management Plan
story highlights

GWP Mediterranean is working on elaborating a stakeholder analysis and public participation plan for the catchment and coastal areas in this transboundary region straddling Montenegro and Albania.

The final outputs of the mission will be completed by the beginning of 2013.

November 2012: The Buna/Bojana Transboundary Integrated Management Plan seeks to identify steps towards biodiversity protection and pollution reduction along the 41 km Buna/Bojana river, which flows into the Adriatic Sea and straddles Albania and Montenegro. The Plan was prepared within the framework of the Global Environment Facility Mediterranean Action Plan (GEF MAP), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) MedPartnership Programme, the Global Water Partnership (GWP) Mediterranean and the UN Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO).

GWP Mediterranean is working on elaborating a stakeholder analysis and public participation plan for the catchment and coastal areas in this transboundary region. During field missions in September and October 2012, GWP carried out consultations with local stakeholders in Albania and Montenegro to understand how local people perceive natural resources management in the river basin and coastal area and which solutions they propose to address these issues. The final mission outputs will be completed by the beginning of 2013.

GWP also asked stakeholder how they perceive public participation within the framework of an integrated management plan to inform its overall work program on participatory management, public participation and stakeholder engagement. GWP Mediterranean has conducted similar activities and plans in the Sava River Basin, the Dynaric Arc Aquifer System, the Drin River Basin and the Nestos River Basin. [GWP News]
