UNFCCC31 October 2012: The High-Level Panel on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Policy Dialogue has released a series of reports containing the results of its research programme on the CDM.

The Panel was established to conduct a dialogue on the past and future of the CDM. It released its report in September 2012, containing 51 specific recommendations on how to position the CDM for the future, including that the CDM: substantially reform its operating procedures in order to address shortcomings and improve its reputation and future performance; and strengthen and restructure its governance to become a more accountable and efficient organization.

In formulating these recommendations, the Panel commissioned an extensive research programme covering 22 topics across three main areas: the impact of the CDM to date; the governance and operations of the CDM; and the future context in which the CDM could operate. This research programme was undertaken by several teams of researchers with expertise in a range of areas related to the CDM.

The results of this research programme have now been released by the Panel. They are presented in three main reports on the three main areas (impact of the CDM, governance of the CDM, and future context for the CDM). In addition, the Panel has also released 11 topic-specific reports on topics including the CDM’s sustainable development impact, its financial set-up, its strengths and weaknesses in comparison with new and emerging market mechanisms, and the potential for cooperation with the Green Climate Fund (GCF). A summary report of all the stakeholder meetings undertaken by the Panel is also included in the released materials.
