The Regional Trade Symposium on Promotion of Technical Assistance and Technology Transfer in Asia and the Pacific took place in Shanghai, China, on 24 October 2013.
October 2013: A regional symposium examined the technical assistance and technology needs of seven Asia-Pacific countries in chemicals and waste management, resulting in agreements on meeting the needs of Mongolia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Regional Trade Symposium on Promotion of Technical Assistance and Technology Transfer in Asia and the Pacific took place in Shanghai, China, on 24 October 2013.
Organized by the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (BCRC China) and Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific (SCRCAP) on the sidelines of the Eighth International Conference on Waste Management and Technology (ICWMT 8), participants included government representatives from Cambodia, the Cook Islands, Mongolia, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Viet Nam, as well as from industry and academia, and the Basel Convention Regional Centre for South-East Asia (BCRC-SEA) in Jakarta, Indonesia, and the Basel Convention Regional Centre in Tehran, Iran.
Countries presented their technology and facility needs and priorities in chemicals and waste management, while industry representatives gave presentations on their technologies and facility services. Discussions also addressed the BCRC Beijing/SCRCAP proposal for a Public Private Partnership for Chemical and Hazardous Wastes Technical Assistance and Technology Transfer and a Platform on Technical Assistance and Technology Transfer of Chemical and Hazardous Wastes Management and Disposal. Following the discussions, Mongolia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and seven enterprises signed the terms of reference of the Platform to launch cooperation in chemicals and waste management in those countries.
The Symposium was funded through the Small Grant Programme of the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions ‘Promotion of technical assistance and technology transfer in Asia and the Pacific,’ which aims to promote the regional exchange of experience in chemicals and waste management, analysis and treatment, foster relationships between countries and enterprises in that regard, promote regional technical assistance and technology transfer, and promote better implementation of the Basel and Stockholm Conventions in the region.
