story highlights

At its 11th meeting, the Adaptation Fund Board also agreed to launch a communication strategy and to focus on enhancing interactions with observers and civil society, among other decisions.

20 September 2010: The Adaptation Fund Board has approved projects in Senegal and Honduras for funding worth US$14 million. These and other decisions were taken at the 11th Adaptation Fund Board meeting held in Bonn, Germany, from 15-17 September 2010.

The Senegalese project represents the first time that the Adaptation Board has approved funding through its Direct Access Modality, which allows recipient countries to have direct access to its funds through National Implementing Entities (NIE). The project of the Senegalese entity “Centre de Suivi Ecologique” seeks to combat coastal erosion exacerbated by climate change and rising sea levels in the country.

The Honduras project on improved water management was put forward by the Government of Honduras through the UN Development Programme (UNDP), a Multilateral Implementing Entity. At the meeting, the Adaptation Fund Board endorsed project concepts put forward by multilateral implementing agencies for Guatemala, Madagascar and Mongolia. The Board also accredited NIEs in Jamaica and Uruguay.

The Board also agreed to launch a communication strategy and to focus on enhancing interactions with observers and civil society. It will initiate open sessions of limited duration at future meetings, beginning with the 12th Meeting of the Adaptation Fund Board scheduled to take place in Cancun, Mexico, following the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 16).
