UNGA Informal Interactive Hearing on Participation of Indigenous Peoples

UN General Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak will convene an informal interactive hearing with indigenous people to reflect on possible further measures necessary to enhance the participation of indigenous peoples’ representatives and institutions in relevant UN meetings on issues affecting them.

This hearing will be part of a preparatory process agreed by UN Member States in a resolution of September 2017. By that text (A/RES/71/321), UN Member States will hold interactive hearings during the next three UNGA sessions to address the participation of indigenous peoples at the UN. The resolution requests a report of the UN Secretary-General by the end of UNGA 74 that will outline achievements, analysis and recommendations on enabling participation of indigenous peoples’ representatives and institutions. Consideration of possible measures then will take place at the 75th session, following consultations with indigenous peoples’ representatives and institutions from all regions as an input to the intergovernmental process. The Assembly requests the UNGA President to organize informal interactive hearings during the 72nd, 73rd and 74th sessions.
