The One Ocean Science Congress (OOSC) will bring together Heads of State and Government and broader society to share scientific insights on the ocean’s health and future trajectory. The event will convene as a special event dedicated to science, as part of the Third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3). The Congress aims to ensure that science-informed decisions enable the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean, safeguard ocean services and benefits, and optimize ocean solutions.
CNRS and Ifremer will organize the event. The Congress will feature plenary sessions, including opening and keynote speeches, as well as oral and poster presentations. Panels and roundtables will focus on enhancing interactions between science and society, and action and policy.
The Congress will align with the UNOC3 Ocean Action Panels and focus on the following themes:
- Responsibility and respect for the ocean;
- Fisheries, with a focus on ending illegal unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and improving transparency;
- Food systems, including ensuring sustainable, equitable, and safe ocean-based food systems;
- Consideration of a pause in deep sea mining while improving knowledge for sustainable and equitable use of the deep sea;
- Protection and restoration, including to meet the 30×30 target and ensure sustainable management in all areas;
- Equitable sharing of benefits of genetic resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ);
- Comprehensive measures to end plastic pollution;
- Shipping decarbonation;
- Climate change mitigation and adaptation; and
- Strong science for ocean action.
