This is the first conference of a new colloquium series devoted to the issues of changes in coastal zones as related to land use. This meeting, sponsored in part by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), will focus on the application of remote sensing and advanced information technologies such as GIS in relation to social and physical studies of the coastal zone. The conference will examine satellite and airborne imagery, as well as anthropogenic effects caused by human populations and land use change on water quality and biological resources in lakes, rivers, estuaries, and other coastal zones, including wetland ecosystems.
