World Symposium on Climate Change Adaptation Showcases Best Practices

The World Symposium on Climate Change Adaptation convened under the theme ‘innovative approaches to implement climate change adaptation.' The event aimed to: foster the exchange of information, ideas and experiences gained in undertaking adaptation projects; discuss methodological approaches and experiences that illustrate how climate change adaptation can be implemented in practice; and enable networking among participants.

wscca_meeting4 September 2015: The World Symposium on Climate Change Adaptation convened under the theme, ‘Innovative approaches to implement climate change adaptation.’ The event aimed to: foster the exchange of information, ideas and experiences gained in undertaking adaptation projects; discuss methodological approaches and experiences that illustrate how climate change adaptation can be implemented in practice; and enable networking among participants.

The symposium, which convened from 2-4 September 2015, in Manchester, UK, also enabled the documentation and dissemination of existing climate change adaptation knowledge and experiences. These will be presented in a book, titled ‘Innovative Approaches to Implement Climate Change Adaptation,’ as part of a series of publications on ‘Climate Change Management.’ A set of papers will also be published, titled ‘Towards Innovative Climate Change Adaptation Practices.’

Participants included: city, regional and national level officials concerned with climate change; NGO representatives; researchers at universities and research centers; academics and teachers; private sector representatives; representatives from development agencies working on adaptation on the ground; and project officers and consultants. The Symposium provided research institutions, universities, NGOs and businesses with an opportunity to showcase their work on climate change adaptation.

Symposium organizers included the International Climate Change Information Programme, the UN University (UNU) Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCE), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the European Environment Agency (EEA).
