World Bank17 October 2011: The World Bank has purchased 2.6 million additional Assigned Amount Units (AAUs) from sustainable, energy efficient, housing projects in the Czech Republic developed under its Green Investment Scheme (GIS).

The GIS programme advocates for more sustainable housing practices in residential buildings, and is expected to generate substantial emission reductions. The World Bank purchased carbon credits on behalf of the Spanish Carbon Fund (Tranche 2) and the Italian Carbon Fund. The agreement with the World Bank brings the total AAUs sold by the Czech Republic to a variety of buyers to 90.1 million. This will ultimately help buyers fulfill their requirements under the Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. [World Bank Press Release]
