16 September 2011: Further to a request from the UN General Assembly (UNGA), the UN Secretary-General organized a workshop to discuss implementation of paragraphs 80 and 83-87 of resolution 61/105 and paragraphs 117 and 119-127 of resolution 64/72 on sustainable fisheries, addressing the impacts of bottom fishing on vulnerable marine ecosystems and the long-term sustainability of deep sea fish stocks.

The workshop took place from 15-16 September 2011, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, and brought together representatives from, inter alia, States, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), subregional and regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs), and relevant NGOs and stakeholders. Participants heard presentations on: the impacts of bottom fisheries on vulnerable marine ecosystems and the long-term sustainability of deep sea fish stocks; the actions taken by States and RFMOs to implement relevant resolutions on the impacts of bottom fisheries on vulnerable marine ecosystems and the long-term sustainability of deep sea fish stocks; and the International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries on the High Seas. These presentations were followed by a general discussion. [Workshop Announcement] [Workshop Agenda]
