Held from 3-7 May 2010, in Geneva, Switzerland, the 16th session of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) agreed on arrangements for intersessional working groups to support the IGC negotiations on an international instrument or instruments ensuring the effective protection of traditional knowledge, traditional cultural expressions and genetic resources.

The first working group session, scheduled to be held from 19-23 July 2010, will focus on traditional cultural expressions, widely considered to be the most mature of the issues on the IGC’s agenda. During the meeting, delegates also began negotiations on the substance of draft international provisions for the protection of traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions. The 17th session of the IGC is schedule to be held in December 2010, in Geneva.
