Data from the UN-Water Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water (GLAAS) are available on the interactive GLAAS data portal (Phase 1). GLAAS provides policy- and decision-makers with reliable, easily accessible, comprehensive data on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) systems.
The data portal allows users to display visualizations of GLAAS indicators, download GLAAS data as well as see key findings in governance, monitoring, human resources, finance, equity and external aid. Data from the past three GLAAS cycles are available and allow for trend analysis.
Among the key findings are the following:
- Governance – few countries have approved policies for sanitation supported by plans with sufficient financial and human resources;
- Monitoring – two-thirds of countries reported assessing progress towards national targets on an annual basis;
- Human resources – a majority of countries lack the needed human resources to achieve national targets;
- Finance – households provide two-thirds of funding for WASH;
- Equity – while over two-thirds of countries have measures in policies and plans to reach poor populations, fewer than 40% have corresponding measures for monitoring and financing that are consistently applied to reach poor populations; and
- External aid – aid disbursements for water and sanitation decreased by over six percent from 2018 to 2019, while aid commitments decreased by two percent in the same period.
WHO is continuing to add additional data, including financial data from WASH accounts, and will add a feature to develop country highlights. [GLAAS data portal]
