UNFCCC Releases Submissions on Drivers of Deforestation and Monitoring Systems

The UNFCCC Secretariat has released two joint submissions from Parties contain their views on: robust and transparent national forest monitoring systems as referred to in paragraph 71c of decision 1/CP.16 as requested by the SBSTA at its 35th session; and on how to address drivers of deforestation and forest degradation as referred to in paragraph 71c of decision 1/CP.16 as requested by the SBSTA at its 35th session.

UNFCCC3 May 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released two joint submissions from Parties containing their views on issues identified in decision 1/CP.16, paragraph 72 and appendix II (FCCC/SBSTA/2012/MISC.1/Add.1) on policy approaches and positive incentives on issues relating to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+).

These submissions are in addition to the 15 submissions by 13 Parties contained in document (FCCC/SBSTA/2012/MISC.1). The two joint submissions are from Bangladesh, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Congo, Costa Rica, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Fiji, Gabon, Ghana, Guyana, Honduras, Kenya, Pakistan, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Suriname and Uganda, and contain their views on: robust and transparent national forest monitoring systems as referred to in paragraph 71c of decision 1/CP.16 as requested by the SBSTA at its 35th session; and on how to address drivers of deforestation and forest degradation as referred to in paragraph 71c of decision 1/CP.16 as requested by the SBSTA at its 35th session.

The submissions will be considered by Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) at its 36th session, scheduled to take place in Bonn, Germany, from 14–25 May 2012. [The Submissions]
