4 May 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published submissions (FCCC/SBSTA/2012/MISC.7) from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on information relevant to emissions from fuel used for international aviation and maritime transport.

The ICAO submission describes progress made on actions requested by the 37th Session of the ICAO Assembly in the field of international aviation and climate change in four key areas: States’ action plans and assistance to States; sustainable alternative fuels for aviation; market-based measures; and global aspirational goals. The ICAO submission also provides information and the ICAO perspectives on work related to climate change finance in the context of the outcome of the Durban Climate Change Conference.

The IMO submission provides information on the 63rd session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 63), which met from 27 February to 2 March 2012, and addressed the control of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships engaged in international trade. MEPC 63 adopted a series of guidelines to support the uniform implementation of mandatory measures to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions of GHGs from international shipping. The IMO submission noted discussion on market-based measures for GHG emissions from international shipping, which will continue at the next session, scheduled to take place from 1-5 October 2012. The submission also describes current IMO work focused on technical cooperation and capacity building.

The IMO and ICAO submissions will be considered by the 36th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), which will convene from 14-25 May 2012 in Bonn, Germany.
