UNREDD Newsletter- 7th issue26 May 2010: The UN-REDD Programme has released its May 2010 Newsletter, which highlights many recent activities and publications on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation, sustainable forest management and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+).

In the News section, articles include reports on: a declaration made by Central African countries at a meeting held in Brazzaville in April 2010, showing their commitment to REDD+; and a UN-REDD side event held at the 14th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), held in Nairobi in May, which stressed keeping biodiversity conservation as a key component in REDD+ strategies. It also highlights articles on forest monitoring in Brazil and Tanzania, and another UN-REDD side event on stakeholder engagement held at the 9th UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
In the Commentaries section, articles address the rights of forest communities in REDD+ partnerships, and ensuring multiple benefits from forests in REDD+ national strategies. Also included in the Newsletter are: a CIFOR publication reviewing current REDD+ research globally; a UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC) workshop on incorporating ecosystem co-benefits in national REDD strategies; and an announcement from UN-REDD/FAO about the pending publication of a document, entitled “Framework proposal for a national forest monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system for REDD+ implementation.” [UN-REDD Newsletter]
