A meeting of the 13 Asian countries which still have wild elephant populations has taken place.

The meeting was held from 24-26 January 2006, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Convened by the Government of Malaysia and facilitated by the Species Survival Commission of IUCN, the meeting aimed to achieve regional consensus on ways to secure the future of the species. Discussions focused on lessons learned, sharing of expertise and transboundary cooperation.
