Ozone Secretariat Launches App to Track and Review Avoided ODS Emissions
story highlights

The CO2e app aims to raise awareness and enhance understanding of the contributions of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and its Kigali Amendment to climate change mitigation.

It allows for the tracking of production and consumption of ten groups of ODSs.

The app generates customized reports and allows for aggregation by Annex group, party, or reporting period.

On the Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) Day at the sixth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-6), the Ozone Secretariat launched an online tool to track and review the avoided emissions of ozone depleting substances (ODSs) in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) terms.

The CO2e app aims to raise awareness and enhance understanding of the contributions of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and its Kigali Amendment to climate change mitigation.

The app allows users to track production and consumption of ODSs in CO2e tonnes or metric tons per country and region in the period from 1986 to 2023. It allows for further refinement depending on EU membership and Article 5 status (developing or developed country).

It also enables the tracking of control levels, reduction from baseline, reduction from the first year of control measures, extra reduction from control levels, and required reduction from baseline for the following ODSs:

  • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs);
  • Halons;
  • Other Fully Halogenated CFCs;
  • Carbon Tetrachloride (CTC);
  • Methyl Chloroform (TCA);
  • Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs);
  • Hydrobromofluorocarbons (HBFCs);
  • Bromochloromethane (BCM);
  • Methyl Bromide (MB); and
  • Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

The app generates customized reports and allows for aggregation by Annex group, party, or reporting period.

UNEA-6 convened in Nairobi, Kenya, from 26 February to 1 March, under the theme, ‘Effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.’ On 28 February 2024, UNEA-6 highlighted the importance of cooperation with multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) with a full day devoted to the discussion.
