owg4 February 2014: In a brief, informal session on 4 February 2014, UN General Assembly (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Co-Chair Macharia Kamau told delegates that the Co-Chairs’ informal consultations with Member States had allowed them to come to a quick agreement on the way forward toward the SDGs. The informal meeting took place during the Group’s Eighth Session (OWG 8), convening in New York, US, from 3-7 February 2014.

According to Kamau, the next step is for the Co-Chairs to formulate a stock-taking document that takes into account everything that has been discussed over the past year. He expects to release this on 14 February 2014. The Co-Chairs also will present a document compiling “priority areas” Member States may wish to discuss, around which a conversation on potential goals and targets can begin. He expects to issue this document by 21 February 2014, allowing a week to review it before the first negotiation session convenes, on 3 March 2014.

Kamau promised that the Co-Chairs will keep their word from informal conversations and “deliver what we promised to deliver.” There were no statements from the floor. [IISD RS Meeting Coverage]
