story highlights

Global Stocktake Explorer supports contextual search of more than 1,600 documents and some 170,000+ pages.

Climate Policy Radar developed Global Stocktake Explorer in partnership with the UNFCCC Secretariat, with support from ClimateWorks Foundation and the Bezos Earth Fund.

Climate Policy Radar has launched an online tool that enables in-depth search through the full text of inputs to the Global Stocktake (GST) under the Paris Agreement on climate change and related documents, including submissions, nationally determined contributions (NDCs), national communications, adaptation communications, and reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Global Stocktake Explorer supports contextual search of more than 1,600 documents and some 170,000+ pages, increases accessibility by translating documents from all languages into English, and uses machine learning-powered filters to highlight themes. The tool helps identify examples and practices by taking the user directly to the exact passage on the page of the original document.

Climate Policy Radar is a not-for-profit climate startup that aims to organize, analyze, and democratize data on climate laws and policies. It builds “open and free tools to help people discover, understand and generate data-driven climate law and policy insight.” Climate Policy Radar developed Global Stocktake Explorer in partnership with the UNFCCC Secretariat, with support from ClimateWorks Foundation and the Bezos Earth Fund.

The tool was launched on 7 June 2023, in the margins of the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany, where the third Technical Dialogue of the first Global Stocktake met from 6-13 June. Discussions during the Technical Dialogue focused on: mitigation, including response measures; adaptation, including loss and damage; means of implementation; and intersections.

The first GST, which is expected to conclude at the UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), in December, provides an opportunity for countries and stakeholders to see where they are collectively making progress towards Paris Agreement goals – and where they are failing. The two-year party-driven process looks at where the world stands on climate action and support, identifies gaps, and seeks to accelerate climate action.
