6 November 2015: The UN, the French and Peruvian Governments, and businesses have added a total of 2,245 commitments to the Non-State Actor Zone for Climate Action (NAZCA) portal, launched in 2014 by the Peruvian Presidency of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to the UNFCCC. The information released brought the total number of commitments registered in the NAZCA portal to 6,649.
The NAZCA portal registers climate action commitments by companies, cities, subnational regions and investors. The newly-added commitments include those from: 353 cities; three regions; 619 companies; and 78 investors. Data from 374 signatories to the Covenant of Mayors, a European movement of local and regional authorities, is included in the new batch.
Commitments by companies, states, regions, and cities include greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction and renewable energy targets.
According to the UNFCCC, the large number of “fresh” entries “clearly demonstrates how leading cities, regions, companies and investors are acting to protect the climate and build resilience,” and “adds crucial momentum to global efforts to reach an effective new, universal climate change agreement in Paris.”
The NAZCA portal, alongside the Lima Paris Action Agenda (a joint initiative by the Peruvian and French COP Presidencies, the Office of the UN Secretary-General and the UNFCCC Secretariat), aims to accelerate climate ambition in 2015 and beyond by encouraging all parts of society to engage in climate action.
